Q.1. Write an essay on any one of the following topics. Use the guidelines indicated and supply and appropriate introduction and conclusion for your essay.
(i) "Either we co-exist or we destroy each other". Examine the significance of this statement with reference to the changing manwoman equations in the 21 st century with reference to
(a) The Need for Women to work with men in all walks of life.
(b) The Difficulties women face in such a situation.
(c) What measures should be taken to make the world more gender friendly ?
(ii) "The future of the 21 st century depends on the capacity of the people to learn unlearning the old thumb rule methods and learn to re- learn the new things". IIIustrate the truth of this statement with reference to science and technology or education system in India. Organise your material so as to show :
(a) the reason for unlearn
(b) the impact of re-learning
(iii) "Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter." (Thomas Jefferson). Examine the importance of the freedom of the press in the light of the statement keeping in view of the following points:
(a) democratic traditions
(b) checks against misuse of power
(iv) What policy, according to you, should a developing country like India adopt for its overall development without detriment to its welfare measures ? Discuss in the light of :
(a) Globalization
(b) World Bank and its policy.
(v) "There is no business in the world so troublesome as the pursuit of fame; Life is over before you have hardly begun your work." Examine the implications of this statement with reference to :
(a) The lives of the great people
(b) Your own efforts to be famous in your career.
Q.2. The following poem illustrates the idea that human life is brief, and the passing of time makes people think that, what is happening, is something new, whereas there is nothing really new in life. There are ten arguments used, which have been numbered for your convenience. Rewrite the arguments in your Own Words in continuous prose, retaining the order.
No ! Time, Thou shall not Boast That I do Change
(1) No ! Time, thou shall not boast that I do change,
(2) Thy pyramids built up with newer might
To me are nothing novel, nothing strange,
(3) They are, but dressings of a former sight;
(4) Our dates are brief,
(5) And, therefore we admire,
What thou dost foist upon us that is old,
(6) And rather make them born to our desire,
Than think that we before have heard them told;
(7) Thy registers and thee I both defy,
(8) Not wondering at the present, nor the past,
For thy records,
(9) And, what we see both lie,
Made more or less by thy continual haste;
(10) This I do vow and this shall ever be,
I will be true despite thy scythe and thee.
(Scythe is a tool with a long curved blade used to cut long grass)
Q.3. The following poem contains ten statements which have been numbered for your convenience. All these statements stress the need to court death with courage and fortitude as it opens the door to eternity. (20)
"Death, Be Not Proud"
(1) Death, be not proud,
Though some have called thee
(2) Mighty and dreadful, for, thou art not so;
(3) For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow Die not,
(4) Poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
(5) From rest and sleep, which thy pictures be,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
(6) And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bone, and soul's delivery.
(7) Thou art slave to Fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war and sickness dwell.
(8) And poppy, or charms can make us sleep as well,
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then ?
(9) One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
(10) And Death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.
(Note : Poppy is a plant from which opium is obtained.)
